In 2026, PayPal will phase out Website Payments Standard (WPS) and Payflow Pro, with processing ending in January 2027.
The NVP/SOAP API and Payflow Pro will also be retired soon after.
To continue accepting payments via PayPal, we recommend to switch to PayPal add-on (for X-Cart 4 and 5) or use PayPal via X-Payments.
How to get PayPal Checkout for X-Cart
Depending on the X-Cart software you use:
X-Cart 4 | Install PayPal Checkout for v4 add-on. |
X-Cart 5.3 | Upgrade to 5.4.1 and install the PayPal add-on. |
X-Cart 5.4.1 and latter | Go to Store › Payment Methods › PayPal. |

Upgrading from Legacy PayPal Integrations
If your store uses PayPal Payments Standard, Express Checkout, or any other legacy PayPal gateway, disable it and install the latest PayPal Checkout add-on. It supports Credit & Debit Card payments, Pay Later, and Venmo.
Then enable and configure it to connect your PayPal account.
If your store runs X-Cart 5.4 or later

Install the PayPal add-on from the X-Cart App Store.
Go to Store Setup › Payment Methods.
Click Add Payment Method.
Find PayPal and click Add.
Enter your account details (Merchant ID, Client ID, Client Secret) and adjust the settings as needed.
Click Save Changes.

If your store runs X-Cart 4
Go to Settings › Payment Methods.
Disable the old PayPal method.
Go to Settings › Modules.
Click More modules from X-Cart Marketplace.
Install the latest PayPal Checkout module from the X-Cart App Store.
Switch to the Payment Gateways tab.
Click Add, then Configure to connect your PayPal account.
Return to Payment Methods, check the new PayPal option, and click Apply changes.
