Certain automotive parts are too large or too heavy to be shipped as standard parcel shipments. These products typically require Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) freight shipping or are subject to carrier-specific shipping restrictions.
X-Cart supports identifying such products using the Oversized item flag. This flag can be populated automatically by supported supplier integrations or managed manually, and can then be used for shipping configuration, product management, and shipping rate calculation.
The current Oversized item status of a product is displayed on the product details page.
Automatic import of LTL product status from supplier integrations
Some supplier integrations provide information indicating whether a product should be treated as oversized (LTL).
If an imported product is marked as oversized by the supplier, X-Cart automatically updates the product as follows:
Oversized item: OFF → ON
For safety reasons, the flag is never cleared automatically. If a supplier later stops reporting a product as oversized, X-Cart leaves the Oversized item flag enabled. It can be cleared manually if necessary.
Note: Different suppliers use different field names and values to indicate oversized products. X-Cart interprets the supplier-specific data and updates the Oversized item flag accordingly.
Finding oversized products
Products can also be filtered and sorted by their oversized/LTL status on the Catalog > Products page, making it easy to review or manage all oversized products.
Shipping rate calculation
How the Oversized item flag is used depends on the shipping method configuration.
Using supplier shipping APIs
When shipping rates are requested directly from supported supplier integrations, the supplier determines whether the order contains oversized (LTL) products and returns the appropriate shipping rates.
This behavior is available for integrations that provide shipping quotes, including:
Turn 14
Keystone
Meyer
These suppliers identify oversized products using their own catalog data (such as product identifiers) and automatically apply the appropriate LTL shipping rules when calculating rates.
Some integrations (for example, Premier and DIX) import catalog data only and do not provide shipping rates, so oversized products have no effect on shipping calculations performed by those integrations.
Other suppliers (such as WheelPros and ATD) currently do not provide an LTL product classification.
Using manual shipping rates
If you use manually configured shipping rates instead of supplier-provided rates, the Oversized item flag can be used to create a dedicated shipping profile for oversized products.
You can assign products with the Oversized item flag to a separate shipping profile and configure shipping methods, surcharges, or restrictions specifically for those products.
