You can enable PayPal Credit in your online store via the PayPal add-on by the X-Cart team. It is not an independent payment method but rather a financing option for your customers from PayPal.

PayPal Credit works only with PayPal Checkout and PayPal Express payment methods in X-Cart.

PayPal Credit allows your customers to pay for their purchases without entering their debit or credit card information on your store website or sharing their data with you. You still get paid right away. More information on PayPal Credit is available on PayPal's website.

PayPal offers free banner ads that promote PayPal Credit financing as a PayPal payment option. A study has shown that implementing these banner ads can drive an 18% increase in online sales. You can specify whether you want to use these banners on your store website via the add-on settings.

Enable PayPal Credit

Since PayPal Credit is available only in the U.S., to get the ability to enable it as a payment option for your customers, you will need to make sure that you specify the United States as your store profile country.

Then, you will need to configure one of PayPal's payment methods for your store. For example, we've chosen to enable PayPal Checkout.

After submitting the required credentials for access to the API and saving the settings on the PayPal Checkout settings page, we get a new tab on the page - the one for PayPal Credit:

It works the same for all PayPal methods: you will get this PayPal Credit tab on the method configuration page as soon as you configure a PayPal method.

Click on this new tab to open the PayPal Credit page and adjust a few settings.

  1. Use the "PayPal Credit is" dropdown to enable or disable the payment option.

  2. Enable the PayPal Messaging option by turning on the respective toggle.

  3. That reveals toggles for PayPal's free banners to advertise PayPal Credit as a financing option on your store website. You can enable banners:
    - on the product pages (under the main product image);
    - on the Cart page (in line with the "Continue shopping" button)
    - at checkout (above the totals block).

  4. Set up the banner type. You can choose between 'text' (a lightweight contextual message) and 'flex' (responsive banner).
    - For the 'text' banner type, you will be able to specify the logo's type and position and the text size and color.
    - For the 'flex' banner type, you will be able to specify the color scheme and layout.

  5. When configured, be sure to save the settings by clicking Save changes.

Please be warned that some PayPal payment methods, e.g., PayPal Express Checkout (legacy), may require extra information for PayPal Credit set-up. For example, PayPal Express Checkout will need a PayPal account e-mail with a PayPal Publisher ID.

That's it. Your customers should now be able to use PayPal Credit as a payment method:

If you have chosen to enable PayPal Credit banners, they should also be able to see the banners in the locations specified in the PayPal Credit settings:

  • On the product details page

  • On the cart page

  • On the checkout page (the screenshot below displays both one-page checkout and fast lane checkout workflows).

  • A product page on a mobile device should look as follows.

Note PayPal does not offer PayPal Credit as a funding source for every purchase. Even if you have enabled PayPal Credit as a way to pay for purchases at your online store, PayPal reserves the right to restrict your customer's ability to use their credit line depending on the circumstances of each purchase. For example, if PayPal Credit does not appear as a payment option at checkout, your customer will not be able to use PayPal Credit for that particular transaction.

Disable PayPal Credit

To remove the PayPal Credit payment method and banners from your store website, you need to disable the PayPal Credit feature on the PayPal Credit tab of your PayPal payment method settings:

  1. Select PayPal Credit is Disabled.

  2. Click Save changes.
