Introduction

Your customers can filter products by selecting the Make, Model, Year, and Submodel of their vehicle in your store. However, not everyone remembers such details. For those customers, there's an easier option – they can search by their VIN instead. Let's explore how this works!

Before You Start

  1. Ensure the Make/Model/Year and Shop By Brand add-ons are installed in your store.

  2. Install and enable the Vehicle VIN Lookup add-on in My Apps.

What is VIN?

A VIN, or Vehicle Identification Number, is a unique 17-character code that identifies each vehicle, much like a fingerprint.

This code holds key details, including make, model, year of manufacture, and engine type. These details can be used to ensure that the parts a customer buys will fit and work correctly with their specific vehicle.

Where to Find VIN?

Typically, this code can be found:

  1. On the dashboard, visible through the windshield 🚘.

  2. On the driver-side door frame 🚗.

  3. In vehicle documents, such as the title, registration card, or insurance 📝.

How does VIN Lookup Work?

VIN Lookup is a product search method that integrates with the Make/Model/Year filter. However, instead of selecting options, customers just enter their VIN in a search field.

The website uses the VIN to identify 🔍 the vehicle's Year, Make, Model, and Submodel, then shows only parts that fit their vehicle.

It is a quick, accurate way to find the right parts without any guesswork.

How does VIN Lookup Help Your Business?

It’s all about customer satisfaction, fewer returns, and more sales.

When a customer chooses the wrong part, they have to return it, adding extra costs that can quickly add up. More importantly, these customers are likely to hesitate before buying again, worried about making the same mistake.

VIN Lookup makes it easier for customers to find the right parts, increasing confidence in their purchases. Confident buyers return fewer items, are happier, and buy more, helping your business grow.

Setting Up VIN Lookup

Once you install and enable the Vehicle VIN Lookup add-on it is ready to go. No additional setups are needed.

How can I disable the VIN Lookup feature?

The only way to disable the VIN Lookup is to disable add-on entirely:

  1. Go to AppsMy Apps.

  2. Use the search bar to find Vehicle VIN Lookup.

  3. Click on a toggle in a right bottom corner of an add-on card to turn it off .

What VIN Decoder X-Cart Uses?

VIN Decoder is a service that processes the VINs from your X-Cart store and returns the vehicle’s make, model, year, and submodel. Currently, X-Cart supports:

NHTSA Vin decoder

* National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

Official service of U.S. Department of Transportation. It decodes VINs for most vehicles made for use in the U.S. including cars, trucks, motorcycles, and trailers with 17-character VINs manufactured after 1981.

To check that the VIN Decoder is set to NHTSA:

  1. Go to AppsMy Apps.

  2. Use the search bar to find Vehicle VIN Lookup and click Settings.

  3. On the next page, look at the VIN Lookup Service 🕹️ selector, which is set to NHTSA. It's the only available option for now.

Using Find by VIN

Adding a Vehicle to My Garage

To save the vehicle:

  • Enter the VIN in the search field and click Find Vehicle .

  • Wait for the Make/Model/Year fields to update.

  • Check the ☑️ Add to My Garage box located above the Go button.

  • Click Go .

Add to My Garage Checkbox

Customer will be transferred to list of products that match the VIN or your filters, but the chosen vehicle will be saved in the My Garage.

What is My Garage?

My Garage lets customers save frequently searched vehicles as presets linked to their account. On their next visit, the vehicle will be preselected, so they won’t need to adjust filters or re-enter a VIN. If they have multiple vehicles, they can switch between them easily by clicking Garage in the header.

What Happens if a VIN Can’t Be Decoded?

A VIN Lookup might not work for two reasons:

  1. VIN is entered incorrectly or is unsupported by NHTSA Vin decoder.

  2. The vehicle VIN is associated with isn’t included in the store’s vehicle filter.

Incorrect or Unsupported VIN

If a customer enters an incorrect VIN, they’ll see the following error message:

We were unable to find results related to your entry. Please check the entry or try another VIN.

This can happen for several reasons, such as:

  • Incorrect number of characters.

  • Invalid characters.

  • Duplicate characters.

  • The VIN is not supported by the NHTSA decoder (e.g. cars prior 1981, or domestic vehicles of another country).

✅ How to Fix It:

The customer needs to review and adjust the VIN before trying again.

Trim Level Data Is Missing

Some VINs may not include data for the Trim level (Submodel). If a customer searches for a vehicle and the fourth level is missing, the system will:

  • Automatically select the first three levels: Year, Make, and Model.

  • Ask customer to manually choose the Submodel.

Select submodel to confirm fitment

✅ How to Fix It:

The customer needs to select the correct Submodel from the list provided.

Vehicle is Not Included in the Store’s Vehicle Filter

If a customer searches for a VIN of a vehicle you don’t sell parts for, they’ll see a similar message informing them that parts for their vehicle are not available in the store.

Your vehicle is ACURA Legend 1990 L, but it`s currently missing in the store’s vehicle filter.

This can also happen with parts you sell if you haven't added the required vehicle and linked it to those parts in your store.
