Search Engine Optimization (or SEO to call it shorter) is the process of improving your site to increase its visibility when people search for products or services related to your business on Google and other search engines. The better visibility your store pages have in search results, the more likely you will garner attention and attract prospective and existing customers to your business.

The factors that can make your online store appear higher in search results are:

  • the number of natural (not paid or social media) links pointing to your store from other websites;

  • the authority of the website based on engagement and other factors;

  • the age of your domain name;

  • website structure and content that is optimized for search engines.

You can take the first three as a basis for a long-term store development strategy. In the short term, the easiest way to get more traffic to your online store is to optimize your content so that a search engine recognizes it as relevant to queries related to your products.

What can you start with?

  1. Find keywords that are relevant to your products and your brand. What search terms can customers use to find your store? Check for more info here.

  2. Add the keywords into your content, including page titles, descriptions, and image alt text. Learn how to manage titles and meta elements here.

  3. Make sure that your store is using SEO-friendly URLs that match the content. See how to set up SEO-friendly URLs here.

  4. Submit your store XML sitemap to search engines so it can be quickly crawled and indexed. See more info here.

  5. Create content relevant to your products and encourage other websites to link back to your online store. See more info here.
